How to Take Your Measurements for a Perfect Fit
A simple, step-by-step way to measure yourself for stitching or for choosing a stitched size.
You need a soft tape measure, a fitted top and a mirror. Stand naturally and keep the tape snug but not tight. It helps to have someone else measure you.
Bust: measure around the fullest part of the chest with the tape level at the back. Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your torso. Hip: measure around the fullest part of your hips.
Shoulder: measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other across the back. Sleeve: measure from the shoulder edge to where you want the sleeve to end. Shirt length: measure from the high point of the shoulder down to where you want the hem.
For trousers, measure the length from the waist to the ankle, plus your preferred width at the hem. If you are unsure, take the measurements from a suit that already fits you well and lay it flat.
Write the numbers down and keep them, so reordering or repeating a tailor visit is quick. When buying a stitched suit, compare your numbers with the size chart and choose the size that matches your bust and hip, not just the label.
